The Knife

Video Installation (two screens)

3:43 minutes

2023

This piece is a collaboration between ESAS and the Laboratorio de Teatro Campesino e Indígena (LTCI), based on a scene from Blood Weddings by Federico García Lorca as adapted by LTCI in Tabasco, Mexico. In the scene women: mothers, wives, sisters, and others recite in unison, forming a chorus of resistance as they reject the violence surrounding the recent killing of yet another man in their community. The text evokes the many ways a knife wound can take a life.

In the ESAS adaptation, another woman appears apart from the group: a maternal figure, a moon goddess, who enters to console them and offer hope. Through their expressions, a shared determination emerges. A collective will to bring this cycle of violence to an end. This piece is part of Re[Membrar], a multi-year project unfolding across six events.
